Nearly half of the book deal with object relational mapping. If you use an OR-Mapper like Genome you don't have to deal with these patterns.

Covers lot's of topics in the context of agility and software design. In both areas you will very insightful things in it. For example there is a very good treatise of several well known design patterns, but you won't find any better critical presentation and comparison of them than in this book.
